AtwoodFest began in the summer of 1982 as Atwood Summerfest, an annual fundraising event for the Atwood Community Center (now the Goodman Community Center). In 2014, the Goodman Community Center withdrew as the host of the event to focus their energy on their core mission. The SASY Neighborhood Association stepped in and partnered with the Barrymore Theatre and the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center to reinvent the festival with a new name – AtwoodFest. This partnership continued until 2024 when Sector67 stepped in the place of the Wil-Mar Neighborhood Center in the partnership.
All three partners are non-profit organizations who use their proceeds for community-service programming.
